The first properly chilly morning always catches us out. One week your gel moisturiser feels perfect, the next your cheeks are tight by lunchtime and your make-up is clinging to dry patches. If that sounds familiar, it's time to think about Korean skincare for autumn — because the products that carried you through a hot, humid summer are rarely the ones that will see you through wind, central heating and a 10°C drop in temperature.
The good news: you don't need to replace everything. A K-beauty autumn routine is mostly about adjusting textures and adding hydration back in layers. Here's how we'd do it.
Three things happen more or less at once. Humidity drops, so there's less moisture in the air for your skin to hold on to. Heating comes back on indoors, which dries the air further. And after a summer of sun, salt water, chlorine and sweat, your skin barrier is often quietly depleted — even if it looked fine in August.
The result is that very common autumn combination: skin that feels tight and flaky but still gets shiny by mid-afternoon. That's usually dehydration rather than true dryness, and it responds beautifully to the layered Korean approach.
Keep it short. A gentle water rinse or mild cleanser, a hydrating toner patted in (two layers is plenty), a lightweight essence or serum, moisturiser, and — this is the bit everyone abandons in September — sunscreen. UVA levels stay meaningful in the UK well into autumn, and it's the wavelength most associated with long-term skin ageing. Our full range of Korean sunscreens includes plenty of comfortable, non-greasy options that layer well under make-up.
This is where the real work happens. Double cleanse, tone, then apply an essence while your skin is still slightly damp — this is the classic K-beauty trick for locking hydration in rather than letting it evaporate.
The Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water is a lovely autumn choice: light enough to layer, but it leaves skin feeling cushioned rather than squeaky. If your barrier has taken a battering over summer, the HARUHARU WONDER Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence is a gentle, fermented option that plays well with sensitive skin.
Follow with a moisturiser that suits the weather rather than the calendar. On milder days a gel cream may still be fine; once the heating goes on, something richer earns its place. The DR.ALTHEA 147 Barrier Cream sits in a nice middle ground — comforting without feeling like a mask. You'll find plenty more in our Korean moisturisers collection.
Add a hydrating mask. The BIODANCE Hydro Cera-nol Real Deep Mask has been one of our most-repurchased masks for good reason — the hydrogel clings properly and skin looks noticeably plumper the next morning. On the nights you can't be bothered, a thin layer of the LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask over your usual routine does a similar job while you sleep.
A few things we see every year:
Follow your skin, not the date. When your moisturiser stops feeling like enough by mid-morning, that's your cue — usually somewhere between late August and early October in the UK.
Yes. UVA passes through cloud and glass and remains present year-round, so daily SPF is still worth keeping in your morning routine.
Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks water. Dehydrated skin can still be oily and often feels tight but looks shiny. Autumn tends to cause dehydration, which is why hydrating toners and essences help so much. Browse our dry and dehydrated skin edit for more.
If products are pilling or your skin feels heavy, you've gone too far. Three to five well-chosen steps beats ten rushed ones.
If working out which textures to change and when sounds like effort, that's rather the point of the Lengbox Monthly K-Beauty Subscription Box. Every month we curate full-size and deluxe Korean skincare chosen for the season — so as autumn arrives, the barrier creams, essences and hydrating masks simply turn up at your door, with a hand-written note and free samples in every box.

Your skin will thank you somewhere around the first frost.
